Renewing the $200 challenge for the building

Looking at that burnt-out building each day, it is clear that it is deteriorating even more.

So, I want to try again with the $200 challenge. The building needs help now, more than ever. If twenty other individuals in Old Seminary Square donate $200 to help save the structure, I will do the same.

Come on, folks, open your wallets! Let's help to save this beautiful monument in the neighborhood.

Bob Sanders loves the neighborhood

Of course, Bob Sanders loves the neighborhood. That should go without saying.

"We are very proud of it and of the whole neighborhood," he wrote to Russell Street News. "My wife and I moved to Russell Street in 1970 and we've been engaged with the neighborhood ever since."

The biggest snowfall this season is expected to move into the region Thursday morning. Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky residents can expect 2-4 inches of snow to fall Thursday. [Link]

Burnt-out

People are over at the building this morning, checking things out. One male looks executive-type, two others are casually dressed.

Snowy day

Kind of nice to see, albeit the extreme cold. Last year, I had the sidewalks of some of my neighbors cleared. You're on your own this year!

KUDOS: Bob just brushed the snow off my sidewalk and porch. (9:06 am). Thanks!

His may not be the perfect solution to slowing an increase in cats making their way to a Northern Kentucky animal shelter, but Dan Evans is willing to try. [ Link ]

UPDATE Obviously, the holiday garland is still posted on the streets. Perhaps too cold over the weekend?

May be last year for holiday garland

I was told yesterday that this may be the last year for the holiday garland along the sidewalks, so enjoy it today before it's all dismantled over the weekend.

The problem: The association is running out of money, especially now that its main source of income, the Holiday Home Tour, was cancelled due to lack of neighborhood participation.

Overall, resident participation is waning on just about everything, which is unfortunate. People just want to live their own lives and leave it at that.

KUDOS: To the Ashbrook House for putting illuminated candles in its windows. A beautiful sight, indeed.

QUESTION: Anybody know why the Sanders Law Firm didn't participate in the street garland program this year? Somebody told me that the firm wants to stay as far away from associating with the locals as possible. Is that true?

Plans to expand 12th Street go back to 30s

The image of 12th Street above is from Covington's 1930 Strategic Plan for its future. Planners wanted a wider 12th Street, noting the need for an improved East-West route thru the city, and noting that 12th Street was too narrow.

Farny Park got 'Friends of Covington' award

You may have noticed the banner hanging on the fence of Henry Farny Park. It's recognition by the Friends of Covington committee for a job well done.

I believe that the park construction was under the sponsorship of the Covington Westside Action Coalition, which seems to be a very effective group.

Snow watch

At 6:43 am when this live camera of I-75 was first embedded at Russell Street News, there was no visible snow fall. But the so-called experts say it's coming. It started coming down just about 8:30 am.

This part of Russell Street kind of looks the same

This 1980 photo of northwest side of Russell Street looks just about the same today as this black and white photo. But, behind many of the walls, extensive renovation has taken place.

Welcome to Covington, in the State of Vandalia

Covington was almost located in the State of Vandalia, it wouldn't have been your old Kentucky home. [Link]

Phoenix Cafe at Pike and Russell Streets

The above promotional card has been posted here before: Phoenix Cafe served as the entertainment center for the neighborhood. You can imagine the New Year's celebrations that took place there. Today, the building is better known as the Parish House.

Ohio River frozen over in 1977

I know that Greg remembers this because he'd worked at The Kentucky Post in 1977, when the Ohio River froze over during a very cold January. Will it happen this winter, considering the exceptionally cold weather?

Service station at
Pike and Main Streets

The corner of Pike and Main Streets has been the home to a service station for a long, long time. Today, there's a Shell franchise but, alas, it will soon be torn down because the city has received a federal grant to reconfigure the intersection in co-operation with the state.
