Happy 2010! That's it for this year at Russell Street News. See you on Monday.

May be last year for holiday garland

I was told yesterday that this may be the last year for the holiday garland along the sidewalks, so enjoy it today before it's all dismantled over the weekend.

The problem: The association is running out of money, especially now that its main source of income, the Holiday Home Tour, was cancelled due to lack of neighborhood participation.

Plans to expand 12th Street go back to 30s

The image of 12th Street above is from Covington's 1930 Strategic Plan for its future. Planners wanted a wider 12th Street, noting the need for an improved East-West route thru the city, and noting that 12th Street was too narrow.

Farny Park got 'Friends of Covington' award

You may have noticed the banner hanging on the fence of Henry Farny Park. It's recognition by the Friends of Covington committee for a job well done.

I believe that the park construction was under the sponsorship of the Covington Westside Action Coalition, which seems to be a very effective group.

Silly season is near;
I support women!

January will mark the beginning of the silly season in politics. I'll have to start thinking about whom to make donations.

I prefer women because they work harder, and seem to be more dedicated. Sorry men, but if you want something done, a woman will get the job done.

In 2008, I was a steadfast supporter of Hillary Clinton to the end. The female politician next door threw Clinton under the bus long before the Kentucky primary, but I hung in there with my donations and my Hillary sign in the front yard.

Made lots of donations to female candidates in 2008 -- even gave $450 to Kathy Groob. One favorite politician is my Florida Congressmember, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

In the forthcoming political season, I'm putting female candidates for office first -- once again.

Emma

Emma is over at the building today. Did the threat by the city, first reported by Russell Street News, to issue a teardown order cause her to reconsider and decide to sell to a developer? Hope so.

Old Seminary Square Facebook page inactive

No staying power. No holiday tour. Unwilling to contribute dollars to save the building. Won't water street flowers during the summer. Nor help kill the weeds growing in the sidewalk cracks.

The latest discovery is the Facebook page that was set-up for the residents. It's been kaput for almost 2 years, after a short life.

Phoenix Cafe at Pike and Russell Streets

The above promotional card has been posted here before: Phoenix Cafe served as the entertainment center for the neighborhood. You can imagine the New Year's celebrations that took place there. Today, the building is better known as the Parish House.

Ohio River frozen over in 1977

I know that Greg remembers this because he'd worked at The Kentucky Post in 1977, when the Ohio River froze over during a very cold January. Will it happen this winter, considering the exceptionally cold weather?

Service station at
Pike and Main Streets

The corner of Pike and Main Streets has been the home to a service station for a long, long time. Today, there's a Shell franchise but, alas, it will soon be torn down because the city has received a federal grant to reconfigure the intersection in co-operation with the state.

Covington High School,
12th and Russell Streets

A photo of the bookkeeping and shorthand class (circa 1911) at Covington High School which was located at the northeast corner of 12th and Russell Streets.

Russell and Ninth Streets

The caption on the photo above says the log cabin was the first house built in Covington. In 1798. It was located at Ninth and Russell Streets (others say it was at Eighth and Russell) until the mid-1930s.

Madison, north of Pike

Motch Jewelers has been around for a long, long time.

Busy Pike and Madison

An early 1900s, turn of the century look at this busy intersection. Many of the buildings still stand today.
