Power outage in Covington

Electricity went out -- mainly in Covington and the northern portions of Florence -- around 7:30 p.m., Monday. "This is not normal," said a Duke spokesman, stating the obvious. [ Link ]

Albro House in 1930

That's the historic Albro House at 1041 Russell Street in 1930.

This Italianate townhouse is one of the largest homes built in this district following the Civil War.

Of brick construction with stone trim, the Albro House is noteworthy for the inspiring bay windows that grace its front façade. In addition to its interesting architectural elements, the house is said to be haunted.

Rumor has it that the lonely widow of Henry Albro still walks the floors of this stately old mansion, dressed in full Victorian splendor.

Jenny & Jason

Got word this morning that Jenny and Jason have moved their belongings out of the garage, and are getting ready to settle down at a new house in Triple Crown.

What a crazy two months for them. I'm going to miss them, the neighborhood will miss them.

PS I'm still in South Florida. Still wearing shorts, it's warm again.

Suspension Bridge lights going
dark, perhaps permanently

The necklace lights on the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge that have shined since 1984 will go off at 8 p.m. Monday. They won't be turned back on unless money can be raised to replace them.

Maybe the Politician can do something about it. After all, she knows everybody. Even the fire crews know her name, as she pointed out during the fire last October, in the midst of death and
heartbreak.

Covington's
First Friday hop

89 degrees, wearing shorts

The temps rose to 89 degrees yesterday in South Florida, compared to high 30s in Covington. Admittedly, I like cooler weather rather than the hot sticky stuff like yesterday. Still, it's nice down here and I'm not sure when to return to Covington.

It will be tough to leave one of the top cities in the country. Progressive, diverse Miami. Let's admit it, Covington is old-fashioned, stodgy and its Old South conservatism really bugs me!

Covington hillside development

Like it or not, Northern Kentucky's hillsides have become a valuable commodity, one that becomes more precious as flat areas in the region become developed, Eric Russo of the Hillside Trust told an audience Wednesday at Notre Dame Academy.[ Link ]

Intersection's pavement is crumbling

It's unsightly, and it's been that way for some time.

The pavement on the east side of W. Robbins and Russell Streets is crumbling and is in woeful need of repair.

Pondering why Russell Street's
Old South culture bugs me so

I have a news site in Marietta GA called CobbOnline. It's been the Number One news site for Marietta and Cobb County (population 830,000) for years.
[ Google rankings link here ]

The daily newspaper there, Marietta Daily Journal, has been none too happy about it and has tried just about everything to knock-off CobbOnline. In fact, the owner wasn't happy when I'd started a print newspaper in 1993 in competition. He was successful in killing my Cobb Times newspaper.

Old Seminary Square's patrician Old South culture reminds me of Marietta, a city also stuck in the old ways. Perhaps that's why I have become so oversensitized about Old Seminary Square.

Food for thought for someone who may be too progressive, too liberal for this old-fashioned neighborhood.

Residents get say
on hillsides

Dan Stewart was glad to learn a public forum on how to develop Kenton County's hillsides will be held Wednesday near his neighborhood, at Notre Dame Academy, because hillside issues are quite close to home for him. [ Link ]

'The Work Out' offers
chance to, well, work out

How lucky we are on Russell Street to have a fitness center nearby, perhaps the only on one in the old Covington area. [ Info link ]

Not the right thing

Decking the fences along the burnt-out building, just seems inappropriate. Putting up celebratory garland and bows just doesn't feel right, given that a person died, and all the heartache that has been caused.

FLORIDA LIFE

My Florida home

This is a Google satellite view of my home, where the arrow is pointing. It's in what is called the Palm Aire Spa Resort and Country Club in South Florida. All that green space is mostly club courses. What looks like a river is the very-wide Cypress Creek Canal which drains into the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

Frank's house

This townhouse, built in the 1850s, is one of the oldest buildings on Russell Street. Now renovated, Frank recently painted the facade a nice cream color with hunter green trim. The above photo was taken in 1980.

Now, I've done it!

One of the elderly ladies here in my Florida building asked me last week if I would take her car and fill it up with gasoline. No problem, was happy to do it.

Now, the word has spread and I'm getting requests from others to do the same. OK, fine. I'll fill your tanks up. Because, that's what being a real neighbor is all about. This is a no blowhards zone.

State hopes to donate
$5000 for building stabilization

The state grant will likely be $5,000 but the exact amount still awaits approval, said Mark Dennen, executive director and state historic preservation officer for the Kentucky Heritage Council. Dennen toured the site Monday. [ Article Link]

Russell and 11th Street

This is the apartment building on the northwest corner of Russell and Eleventh Streets, as it looked in 1980. The building was completely renovated in 2008. Looking closely at the photo, there are signs that it suffered some fire damage.

I'll drink to that
